Who’s Talking About You On Facebook And Why It Matters!

You’ve been told you need a Facebook Page, so you know have your Facebook Page up, you have put up a nice profile pic and a welcome tab, you invited your friends and your family and got a few likes, but now months later….nothing…

No new likes, no comments whats happening?

What IS happening is your posts (if you are still posting updates to your page), are not being seen, or of very little interest to any of the people you had “like” your page.

Comparisons of Numbers on Likes and Talking About This

Here is a pic of the numbers that are most important to you and the people who go to your page. These numbers will often determine if a new person will “Like” your page, Higher numbers better page, low numbers either a new Page, or a boring page…

With this pic I’m showing some comparisons. I’m basing these distinctions around small business so when I talk about an average number, it’s based on what is average on Facebook for small business owners.

These two very important numbers are on the left hand side of your Facebook Business Page. When people visit your page wall these 2 numbers the “Like This” showing how many people have “Liked” your page, and the “Talking About This” show visitors weather your page is popular and your posts are being shared around and talked about.

What The “Talking About This” number is-

Taken from Facebook-

“People Talking About This”, indicates how many people are actually talking about your business to their friends. This metric includes everyone who:

  •  Liked your Page
  •  Liked, commented on, or shared your Page post
  •  Answered a Question you’ve asked
  •  Responded to your event
  •  Mentioned your Page
  •  Tagged your Page in a photo
  •  Checked in or recommended your PlaceGetting more people to talk about your business allows you to reach more people. You can see how many people your Page is reaching by looking at the “Total Reach” metric. Please note that two of these metrics – Total Likes and People Talking About This – are visible to anyone visiting any Page. As a result, people who visit your Page can look at these two metrics to understand how popular, active and engaging your Page is. “

Facebook users will make decisions about “Liking” your page based on the overall look of your page, these numbers, what you are posting, and if they know you or don’t know you.

Obviously the larger your Pages numbers are, the far more attractive your Page appears, because it looks like you have something worth sharing on your Page, by a LOT of people.

BTW The Superstar in this list was National Geographic…not a small business but I wanted to show you what Superstar numbers look like..

If you fall into the “Low” or “Going Nowhere” category, then you need to do some work, or give up. Clearly you are either not bothering with your Page, or unaware of how to make your page grow so you can get some great benefit out of it to support your online marketing.

How To Increase These Numbers!

Facebook Pages need to be updated regularly and the posts on them shared and interacted with in order to have any value. You won’t get leads or enhance your online marketing on Facebook if you don’t follow some basic rules. These Are:

  1. Post regularly, min 3 times a week, max twice a day.
  2. Mix up your posts with video links, add photos to most of your posts, short posts, longer posts, links back to your website, ask questions, hold polls, create simple competitions.
  3. Always comment back when someone comments on your post.
  4. Thank people for sharing your post.
  5. Make sure the headline of your post is descriptive of what you are posting but also intriguing..don’t give the entire story away in the post…unless its just a post not a link back to your blog.
  6. Ask for comments, but make sure you have not made a post that cannot be argued with.
  7. Make sure you are putting your Facebook “Like” box on your website where it can be seen.
  8. Put your Facebook Page address on your buisness marketing material and advertising, business cards and brochures.
  9. Cross post your Page posts to Twitter or to LinkedIn, and to your Facebook Profile, (if you also have business connections on your profile).
  10. Don’t make every post a sell, post updates that relate to your target market but support your business goals.
  11. Share other expert tips, from people who support your industry.
  12. Be generous with your tips, give give give.
  13. Don’t link every post back to YOUR website.
  14. Add humour!
  15. Find your target market on other social media and encourage them to visit your Page, but do it subtly, don’t send direct messages saying “Please like us on Facebook”, that’s really not seen as good social networking etiquette. Use a story with a link to your to get them across.
  16. Be aware your Facebook “Friends” and your family may NOT be your target market so may not be interested in your Page posts, even though they were kind enough to “Like” it to get you going..
  17. Take up some Facebook advertising and target it precisely to your target market.

Remember consistency content and interaction is Key. Facebook hides Page posts by people who have…” 0 talking about this”
