OMG How did you get one so fast
I had an iPhone 4 and was just about to finish up that 24 month contract…so…
I couldn’t believe my luck actually, I pre-ordered online within the first hour. The first time I tried, it wouldn’t connect me, 2nd time through bingo! So pre-ordering it online, which was dead easy through Telstra (good work Telstra on improving your website interface BTW!), ensured that I was one of the very first people in the world to get the iPhone5 Friday morning, Australia was one of the first countries to get the phones delivered “Nyah Nyah!”. Which is incredibly unusual, as we are often waiting weeks after the States to get the first shipments.
So I was still in my PJ’s ripping open the delivery pack at 8pm on Friday. I filmed an un boxing (Geek Girl Alert!) just for fun, and spent the rest of the day setting it up and making sure all my apps were working, and checking out all the new functions. I do love a new gadget!
I’ve had the iPhone 5 now for over a day, and wanted to really put it through its paces before reviewing it. And boy did I!
Why The Excitement?
I’m such a girl geek at heart, I got my first mobile phone 2nd hand, I think it was a Sony Erickson, in 1995 or so. I was the first in my family and friends to have a mobile phone. A mobile phone has been the centre of my life and business ever since, and none more than now that I’m consulting on Social Media and cyber safety. Having a great phone is essential. The other reason for excitement is that I just love Apple products, they are so beautifully made and they just work! Yup I’m a Fan Girl be warned!
What Plan Did I Go For?
I use my phone less as a traditional phone and more as a computer, most of my communications are done through email and social media, I use my phone to read news posts and keep up to date with social media and I.T happenings during the day. As such, I only need a small plan for voice and text so I went for the bottom rate. I ordered from Telstra the $60.00 per month plan with a 16G phone. I increased the data plan up to 4G as I use my phones data most of all, and use it as a “personal hot spot” for my iPad. All up $90.00 per month. Telstra does have the most expensive plan but I’m paying for coverage. I travel around and need my phone to work.
With all music, docs and pics etc…now in the cloud, I find I don’t need more than 16G but if you’re more of a gamer than I am, you might want the larger size. I do have a few games on mine, the kids play them and so do I! The apps take up all the room on my phone I have 5.4Gs of them! but I still have 5 gigs free right now.

So whats the verdict?
I got the white phone just for a change I’ve always had a black phone, except for a red blackberry and a pink Nokia I had once. The white iPhone 5 feels and looks amazing. The screen resolution is just stunning, so bright and sharp and saturated with colour. I love dressing up my phone so I pimped it out straight away with a great Wallpaper and Lock picture from “Pimp Your Screen” .
Getting the phone set up was interesting, at first my Mac Book Pro didn’t show the phone in iTunes when I connected it, so I tried to update the phone via the cloud…er…don’t….our download speeds are way to slow to do via wireless. I restarted the computer and reconnected the phone and it restored most of my data very fast. I did then have to go into my apps and manually sync them. Only some Apps came across initially . Nothing went wrong, all the settings were correct, and everything worked.
Yeh, so its lighter, don’t really care so much about that really, I always protect my phones with a very sturdy case and cover. I hand down all my gadgets and computers to my family and I’m very very careful with them. I look after my gear like its a baby, I hate to see it scratched. As a result my gear maintains good value if I ever have to sell, which I have done at times and got good prices.
Besides the amazing high resolution screen with extra size and amazing retina display, the first thing you will notice is it’s speed. Everything on the phone opens very quickly, even apps that need to connect to the Internet. So your browsing and app use works a lot faster. The new lightening connector is also way faster than the old USB with 30 pin connector. So when you connect the phone to your computer all your photos transfer much faster, and your computer registers the phone is connected and boots up in iTunes super fast.
The screen size is one of the biggest pluses, with the ailing eyesight that I have it makes a BIG difference. and yet it doesn’t feel hugely bigger in my hand because the width is the same as the 4 and 4S. Watching video and playing high graphic games on it, is just amazing. Like sort of Nintendo size. Will I play games on it!? You Bet! I never really did on my 4 but the games they are developing for this faster larger phone are amazing! So immersive and beautiful, and I’m all into the pretty for gaming I’ve already downloaded my new favourite game, Lili. Its just so smooth and delicious! I know I will be having a great time playing it on the long car trip to the snow tomorrow!
The New Connector
Yup its a pain, all my accessories ( and I have a drawer full!) won’t work again till I get the adaptor, which I will when I get home from my trip. But the “lightening” connector is really fast. Also recharging is super fast, much faster than before.
Way better. I can burn through 50% of my battery in the morning on my 4 with an hour or so of use, reading social media and blogs. But its only down about 20% on the new phone. Yes my old phone is 2 years old, but there is still a noticeable longer battery life.
The sound is a huge improvement from the 4. I love to share videos with my Kids when we are out, and they can never really hear the video well when we are outside. Especially my hearing impaired son, the volume just through the external speakers is so loud without any distortion.
New Ear Phones
Love em, Love em, Love em. Great sound, and the fit is much much better! I also like the slightly larger controller on it, easier to manipulate it without looking it at it. I’m a little bewildered as to why the earphone connector is on the bottom of the phone instead of the top as before, but perhaps with the extra space at the bottom without the 30 pin connector socket they decided to change it over, so that new Docks could have the earphone socket without needing a cord as previous ones did if they had speakers. Makes better design sense I guess for accessories. Just have to get used to turning my phone upside down in my bag if I have the head phones on no big deal.
No Big Deal and just a big beat up from the PC Android crowd. It seems to look fine for my location. And look, its not as if Apple don’t have the money to fix it and compete with Google Maps. I have no idea why they released it before it was really ready…but I have another Map App with voice directions Sygic that I tend to use so I don’t have to keep looking at my phone whilst driving. Maps will improve I’m sure. Google will offer a Map app for iPhone soon, as they have for the YouTube app which has also gone from the iPhone 5.
We don’t have 4G here on the Northern Beaches and there is really no reliable word on when it will reach us. But I will be working more in the city next year, so the 4G will be useful. I’ll be getting a 4G dongle for my laptop as well. With all the online work I do, speed is so important for productivity. One thing that is always slow on my old 4 and now 5 iPhone is YouTube…sometimes it takes 30seconds to load a video…I give up mostly, and so do you, I bet. It might be one reason that YouTube marketing hasn’t taken off that much in Australia, the terrible 3G download speed means that people on mobile devices wanting to view a video…just give up, so with 4G growing, start looking into video marketing!
This is my first time using Siri, the iPhone 4 only has voice control which was crap…and so frustrating. I have to say Siri doesn’t like Aussie accents much, you do have to talk carefully and slowly, but it works. My son showed me what happens when you say “Beam Me Up Scotty” to Siri…(try it and see) and a few other little tricks, very cute “Why is my mum such a pain in the ….” got a reply “would you like me to search for that on the web? Will I use Siri? Absolutely! I’ll use it to make calls while driving, you can set it so I just have to press the controller or press the button on my ear piece. I’ll also use it instead of typing. I’ve allready used it really well for putting on comments on Instagram photos. Some apps on the iPhone just won’t go landscape mode (which annoys me intensely) I find it almost impossible to type on the screen in portrait. With Siri in many cases where the app isn’t in landscape you can press the little Siri button on the keyboard and speak your comment. It worked 8 times out of 10 and it was fast!
Very important to me! And the new Privacy menu tab is great. It’s simple and does the job. Be sure to check it out! Right in main menu under the Brightness and Wallpaper setting.
I bought a “fancy pants” video/stills camera in the states a few years ago. It’s now obsolete. It is 7 Pixels, this iPhone 5 camera is 8 and has panorama and the photos just look so much better! It kills…I’ve had a really good play with the video which is now 16.9 which means wide screen…took some macro shots and got really close around 3 inches and it sill focused. The camera has a nice lock focus setting on it as well. The pictures look amazing, big step up from the 4. I use my camera a LOT, for Instagram, nature, bird, family and friend shots (and cat pics obviously…). I think my biggest kid is going to get my 3 year old video cam…hmm it’s pink tho! Low light pics are said to be improved, the iPhone 4 sucked at low light pics awful….The new camera is fantastic with flash pictures. The 4 used to make people look like they had just been exposed to an Atom Bomb!
I took these of Bella in low light one with HDR turned on one off, what do you think?
Should You Run Out And Get One?
If you use your phone as a mini computer like I do, and use it as your main camera then that’s a YES!
Don’t get the big one 64G or 32G unless you play a LOT of games.
So far no bugs that I’ve found…
Once you have one of these the 4 and 4s screen will look really small, low definition and slow.
Yes the iPhone 5 doesn’t look incredibly different but its an amazing upgrade from the iPhone 4.
And Maps…no big deal, improvements will come.
Now my iPad 1 looks really bad….:( time for an upgrade!
Putting it down is really hard….
